Village Scene

30" x 60" (1997)
Yarn Painting (Original)

A most unusual view of a village. At midmorning everyone is at work on the farms and only the birds and animals remain in the village. Umbrella trees rise from among the roofs. The delicately twisted yarn creates a pattern of shimmering breeze though the leaves. A softwood tree unsuitable for construction, the umbrella tree provides the perfect shade from the hot sun. It also produces a marvelous very hard nut! Shaped like a flower with a hole in the middle it is the perfect wheel for a child's toy! Taking a palm stem for an axle innumerable Yoruba children have constructed toy vehicles leaving tracks throughout the village. Just imagine! The calm of these hours is depicted by the artist as a treat that very few people ever see.
