The
technique of sand painting is an old African technique perfected by ‘Segun in
1993. It is still relatively rare in the US. The sand paintings made by Segun
illustrate aspects of traditional Nigerian and Yoruba culture. Exhibit of 2-3
completed works and demonstration of technique introduces students to both
consideration of cultural elements and technical methods.
The sand
painting shown above is titled “The Initiation Dance of the Maidens”. Students
are introduced to it as an example of sand painting and illustration of a
traditional rite of passage for young women.
- A line
drawing on plywood surface is used to develop preliminary concept for the
picture.
- Glue is
applied to adhere colored sand as the painting medium.
- Shading,
highlighting and line definition are added through subsequent layering of glue
and sand.
A palette
choice of various color is provided. These can be blended and/or layered to
create a virtually unlimited color selection.
