Respect For The Head

20” x 26” (1989)
Linoleum-print on fabric

The Gwari people of northern Nigeria are known for the fact that unlike others, they carry their goods on their shoulder rather than their head. They hold that the head is the most important part of the body and must be respected as such. Also known for their fine pottery, a scene of daily life is depicted on the surface of a classical Gwari pot. In the background thatched homes can be seen. The steep peaked roofs are granaries. Both homes and granaries are capped with the signal ceramic pot. Thatching here is renown for water resistance and insulation against the heat of the hot summer months. On the left a man carries a pot of yam tubers, a staple in the Gwari diet
