Respect For The Head

The
Gwari people of northern Nigeria are known for the fact that unlike
others, they carry their goods on their shoulder rather than their
head. They hold that the head is the most important part of the body
and must be respected as such. Also known for their fine pottery, a
scene of daily life is depicted on the surface of a classical Gwari
pot. In the background thatched homes can be seen. The steep peaked
roofs are granaries. Both homes and granaries are capped with the
signal ceramic pot. Thatching here is renown for water resistance and
insulation against the heat of the hot summer months. On the left a
man
carries a pot of yam tubers, a staple in the Gwari diet
