"INITIATION DANCE"
24" x 36"
(2000)
Sand Painting
(Original)
Initiation
dance is common among marriageable ladies in some Yoruba communities.
This picture depicts the colorful dances of the young ladies as
part of their preparation for marriage. This is an aspect of a traditional
‘rite of passage’ to adulthood. In
the dance they spin themselves around several times.
Dressed
in their best traditional “Iro” and “Igbaja”, their necklaces of
beads and ornaments beautify them as they dance to the drum of their
choice. People in the houses around can be seen watching and congratulating
the young ladies.
