FLYING TORTOISE

 12" x 24" (1993)
Sand painting

(Ltd edition prints only)

Tortoise occupies a prominent role in African and Yoruba traditional folk story. This picture illustrates one of the folk tales where tortoise made friend with all birds because of famine. Despite the famine, the birds were making a feast. Tortoise decided to accompany them and the birds donated wings to him, but because of his selfish nature he disappointed all of them. He was seen here flying to the great feast. An act that gave him more fame for his selfishness.
Children learn faster through oral tradition, a way by which information and lessons of life are given.
