Linoleum Block Printing:
The principles of
linoleum cutting and various printing techniques are taught and practiced.
These workshops seek to provide
extended interaction with teachers and students interested in knowing more about
African tradition and history and aesthetics in a relaxed and focused
environment. It could be printed on fabric or paper.
Grades
9-12
ART CURRICULUM STANDARDS:

matter, symbols and ideas
- Students will make connections among the
visual arts, other disciplines, and daily life
The
workshop is introduced with an exhibit of completed works by Mr. Olorunfemi
accompanied by lecture and open exchange about the aspects of Yoruba and
Nigerian culture illustrated. Many of the prints introduce Yoruba, Nigerian
and pan-African fables and stories.
Students are encouraged to think about
subjects they wish to use in their work, drawing from their own experiences.
A preliminary drawing session follows with ongoing questions and answers.
Individual
attention in the initial drawing session supporting the exploration process
with technical guidance and creative encouragement is provided. Forms, lines
and area are approached from the perspective of planning a printing block.
The drawings are copied to linoleum blocks and refined according to
technical considerations for the print making process.
